Say "No" to Chemicals
How Mineral Sunscreens Work
Mineral sunscreens use Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide as active ingredients. These compounds are naturally occurring minerals that primarily deflect and scatter UV rays, meaning they sit on top of your skin and create a barrier between your skin and the sun. If mineral sunscreens use all-natural ingredients then they can be safe for your skin without any negative environmental impact, like Divios Protect. However, many minerals sunscreens are not "all-natural", mislead consumers, and still use a multitude of harmful ingredients.
Poor UV Protection + Toxic
Why Chemical Sunscreens Fail Us
Chemical sunscreens must be applied to the skin before sun exposure because they need to be absorbed into the surface of your skin. Once they penetrate your skin’s top layer, they work by absorbing UV rays (and usually only UVB rays). These chemicals typically reach your bloodstream, and studies have shown them to be prevalent in urine tests and breast milk samples. As you may have experienced, these chemical ingredients can cause skin reactions, including acne, burning, blisters, etc. Worst of all, they can lead to cell mutations and hormone disruption.
Harming Our Bodies & Planet
The Dangers of Avobenzone and Oxybenzone
The most common chemical ingredients in sunscreens are Avobenzone or a group called Benzophenones. These UV-absorbing chemical actives are actually toxic — causing endocrine and reproductive disruption, as well as potential DNA and cell mutation, which can lead to cancer. When avobenzone reacts with chlorinated water and UV radiation it can break down into toxic chemicals. When juvenile coral (reefs) are exposed to Oxybenzone, they suffocate and die. Divios is Reef Safe because it's 100% Chemical-Free.
On Chemical Absorption Rates:
"Scientists conducted a pilot study and learned that four active ingredients commonly found in sunscreen (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule) were absorbed through the skin into the body at amounts exceeding the FDA threshold of 0.5 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL)."
On Cosmetics Regulation:
“FDA's legal authority over cosmetics is different from our authority over other products we regulate, such as drugs [sunscreens], biologics, and medical devices. Under the law, cosmetic products and ingredients do not need FDA premarket approval, with the exception of color additives.”
On the use of Avobenzone:
"Avobenzone may become toxic if used too often or in large doses [...] It may cause allergic reactions in some people [...] Avobenzone absorption has not been studied in children or pregnant women, so parents and parents-to-be may wish to consider other sunscreen ingredients."
Know Your Skincare Ingredients
Remember, it’s not just chemical sunscreens that use active ingredients potentially harmful to you and our environment. Many cosmetic and skincare companies blend-in handfuls of other chemical / synthetic ingredients to be used as fragrances, dyes, parabens, thickeners, solvents, emulsifiers, moisturizers and conditioners. Unbeknownst to the average consumer, these various additives can be skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters and carcinogenic.
